Pelvic Floor Q & A
What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles located in your pelvic region. They lie horizontally across the pelvis, acting like a hammock to support your bowel and bladder. In women, the pelvic floor muscles also support the uterus and vagina.
Aging, pregnancy, and childbirth may weaken these muscles, affecting their ability to keep your abdominal organs in place.
What conditions involve the pelvic floor?
Many health conditions develop because of a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. These conditions include:
- Urinary incontinence
- Fecal incontinence
- Vaginal prolapse
- Pelvic pain
- Menstrual pain
- Sexual pain
- Scar pain
- Painful bladder syndrome
Pelvic floor therapy is one of the primary treatments for these conditions.

For patients with pelvic, sexual, menstrual pain, or painful bladder syndrome, your physical therapist will develop a unique plan of care and collaborate with you on how often you should come to therapy. As your condition improves, your physical therapist adjusts your plan, decreasing the frequency of your visits.
Our team of Physical Therapists will provide the best pelvic floor therapy treatment you need to overcome any condition you may be experiencing. Whether it’s pelvic, scar, or sexual pain, urinary or fecal incontinence, organ prolapse, or bowel dysfunction, we will create a tailored treatment plan for your needs to help you improve your pelvic health and return to your previous lifestyle without pain.
Why Pelvic Floor Therapy?
The pelvic floor has a layer of muscles that support organs including the bladder, uterus and bowels. There are a wide variety of pelvic floor conditions that occur when these muscles become weak or damaged through childbirth or aging. Nearly all pelvic floor disorders can be treated and corrected through physical therapy, including specific treatments such as biofeedback, bladder training, and more.

The specific treatments and techniques used, as well as the duration and frequency of following treatment sessions, will depend on your unique needs.
Patients with pelvic, sexual and menstrual pain or painful bladder syndrome may be treated using exercise, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, or biofeedback.
